Out of all the heart breaking things in The End, I’ve got to say this one really got to me.
This 1967 Chevrolet Impala is more than a car. For all intents and purposes, this is Sam and Dean’s home. This car is the only constant thing in their lives, when you actually think about it. Every since they were young and John was the one who’d drive it, with Dean preferring to sit in the back to watch over Sammy, whispering to his dad to put on a classic rock station that would knock Sammy out, this car was the only thing that couldn’t die.
And even when it got destroyed—twice, I might add—Dean fixed it from the ground up, keeping all the blemishes, because that’s what made her beautiful. He’d leave in his and Sam’s scrawl of their initials and never taking out the legos that were stuck in the heater, or the soldier in the ash tray, because these were the things that made it theirs.
So how heart breaking is it, that 2014!Dean, let the car become this old, rusted thing? That instead of repairing it and keeping it in tune, he let it become nothing but a memory?
I’d like to think that Dean let the Impala become junk after learning that Sam said yes to Lucifer, and that there was literally no point in keeping the car anymore. That when Sam said yes, a part of Dean died, and his home—no, their home, could no longer be a home without Sam.
So basically, there is no point to home with Sammy.
