wrench-wench:

So, Jason was on the team as Robin for a brief time.  A lot of the others were kind of uncomfortable around him at first because they were getting used to Dick as Nightwing, and this new kid as Robin (there were a lot of confused signals in the beginning, because the team would signal for Robin to do something, when they actually meant that they wanted Dick to do something).  Also, Jason’s personality tended to grate of some people, like Wally.

But Artemis and Jason got along wonderfully.  Artemis picked up on his background right away, and they bonded over their mutual shitty childhoods in the slums of Gotham.  She became like an older sister to him, and Jason felt closer to Artemis than he did to Dick (this caused jealousy issues from several people.  Dick’s guilt over not being as good a brother to Jason as he felt he should have been is also part of the reason he tries so hard with Tim).  Artemis relished this role, and swore to be better at the big sister gig than Jade was.

When Jason was killed, the team couldn’t do anything about it, and the League seemed practically impotent.  Artemis was as devastated as Bruce and Dick were.  She felt like nobody did enough; like they didn’t do all that they could to save Jason, or at least punish his killers.  So she left the team.

Officially, Artemis is retired from the hero business.  But Batman, Dick, and Roy are all aware of a mysterious “Huntress” who has been tracking down people related to Jason’s death, and taking them out.
